Black History Celebration - Workmanship TNJT

Happy Black History Month!

On the last day of BHM, Workmanship wanted to take some time to acknowledge some of our lesser known Black Heroes!

Lewis Howard Latimer (1848–1928) -

Queens Library (nytimes.com)

While Thomas Edison is famous for the lightbulb, Latimer actually improved it by inventing the carbon filament, making bulbs last longer being more practical for everyday use.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831–1895) -

AABPS (American Association of Black Physician Scientists)

She was the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, graduating in 1864 and dedicating her career to serving underserved communities.

Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922–1999) -

Famous Black Inventors

As a nurse who often worked late nights, she feared for her safety and invented the first home security system in 1966, complete with cameras, monitors, and two-way microphones.

Ella Baker (1903–1986) -

National Today

A quiet giant of the movement, Baker was a strategist who helped organize the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and played a pivotal role in forming the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
